Years 5 and 6 (Key Stage 2)
All children in Years 5 and 6 have a daily mathematics lesson. Children are taught in 3 ability groups. During this lesson the children are taught as a whole class for a high proportion of the time. This does not mean a return to a formal ‘chalk and talk’ approach however, with the teacher talking and the children mainly listening. In fact our aim is for the teaching to be lively, interactive and stimulating, with oral and mental work featuring strongly in each lesson. The framework for teaching mathematics from to Year 6 sets out what needs to be taught year by year and, together with the information which we receive from the first schools about individual children, enables us to plan, teach and assess the National Curriculum for Mathematics in a way that develops children’s mathematical skills to the full.
Years 7 and 8 (Key Stage 3)
Children in Years 7 and 8 have a mathematics lesson on each of four days. Children are taught in 3 or 4 ability groups. Through co-operation, collaboration and discussion, all pupils can achieve their potential, as well as acquiring a positive attitude towards mathematics. Our aim is to incorporate the using and applying aspect of mathematics into all areas in order to ensure that the children see mathematics as a meaningful, relevant subject. The various areas of mathematics to be covered follow the KS3 Mathematics Strategy, and in each year group children will be studying number, algebra, shape and space, and data handling topics. Computers are available and are used to teach and enhance mathematical concepts.
