Art is alive and thriving at Seaton Sluice Middle School. Pupils experience a balanced programme of Art and Design activities based on National Curriculum guidelines and the QCA Scheme of work for Key Stage 2. During Years 5 and 6 they develop their knowledge and experience of different materials, tools and techniques. They use these in a range of contexts linked where appropriate to other areas of the curriculum. Connections and comparisons are also made between their own work and that of other artists, craft-workers and designers, in various genres and styles, from a variety of cultures.
In Years 7 and 8 pupils develop their visual perception and the skills associated with investigating and making art, craft and design. The development of visual literacy and knowledge and understanding includes the history of art, our diverse artistic heritage and a variety of other artistic traditions. Pupils develop a greater depth of knowledge, broader understanding and apply skills more expertly.
There is an active after school Art Club and gallery visits to the Baltic and Laing Art Galleries are an integral part of the Art experience.
