Our children begin to learn French as soon as they come to middle school, where they enjoy speaking the language in games, activities and songs. Consequently, by the age of eleven (the time when most children begin to learn a foreign language) they speak French confidently and well.
In Years 7 and 8, our approach to learning French closely follows National Curriculum guidelines with equal emphasis given to the language skills, ie listening and understanding, speaking, reading and understanding and writing French. Together with other schools in the Astley partnership, we have agreed themes and topics which support the programme of study required for key stage 3 and ensure continuity and progression from middle to high school. The principal French course used by both middle schools ‘Equipe’ is introduced in Year 6.
At Seaton Sluice children are given opportunities outside the classroom to use the language they have acquired. Year 7 children will be able to exchange letters with pen friends in the south of France and both Year 7 and 8 children may take part in a school visit to France which is offered every two years. In addition, this year we have won a bid which will involve us in a three year Comenius project, linking our school with five other schools in Europe.
