English

English continues to build on previous good practices established in First Schools, developing a child’s personal skills, whilst complying with National Curriculum requirements.

There is a daily Literacy Hour for all children in Key Stage 2. During these ‘hours’ they engage in activities to extend their ability in two of the attainment target areas: Reading and Writing. The third English attainment area, Speaking and Listening, is an integral part of every daily lesson. The focus of the “hour” is based upon the objectives identified by a National Framework for Literacy.

A wide range of literary texts and Poetry is studied by all year groups. All children have access to, and are members of, the refurbished and restocked school library, which is overseen by the school librarian.

In Key stage 3 children study a wider and more demanding range of text types, in accordance with the new Literacy Strategy for Key Stage 3, building on skills acquired in Key Stage 2 to ensure steady progression. Writing tasks in Key Stage 3 encompass a wider and more difficult range of styles to prepare pupils for Key Stage 4 requirements.

Homework is set weekly to consolidate and extend skills taught during lessons. Tasks are appropriate to age and ability.
